If you hang out with me often, often similar topics always come up. Roleplaying, Renaissance Festival, Pets, Movies, and Celiac Disease/Gluten Free. It is guaranteed that if any of you follow this Blog, those topics are bound to eventually come up. Today I was going through the halls of school thinking about more ways I can raise money for Movember. http://us.movember.com/ When I did I had just happened to run across a bulletin board for school groups. Now, knowing how the brain works in leaps and bounds.. it started to bound and leap… In these bounds and leaps from Movember Group.. that really wouldn’t fly since it would last for one month and be done, then to a concept of a Celiac/Gluten Free Group… It bounced to me realizing how much information I have accumulated on the subject of Celiacs Disease and Gluten Free eating. As well as all the places I knew to go to get information if I had a question. Through the community Facebook group I created for this exact thing, we have accumulated restraint lists, recipies etc. That is kind of unheard of when not being run by a huge organization with a bunch of confusing web links and spam and other crap to have to sift through.
As many know I regularly say that “if you know someone recently diagnosed or has questions, send them my way!” What if my wanting to help others learn and by that learn myself could be used on such a higher level than I realized.
My brain skipped back to the groups and then link to something else. Public awareness or education events. Every Semester Century College has what is called Student Success Day. It’s an entire day dedicated to the students, for helping them with school things, real life things, seminars on anything from stocks to health. Perhaps I could propose having an event of my own on that day to help. Every student looks at the list of events, most get extra credit for attending any of the events. With the high volume of people diagnosed, I am sure to be able to help people. Not to mention with all of the Gluten Free awareness that has starting coming up, there may be a lot of people who have no clue who just are curious or may want to know more. If I am lucky, someone may show up curious and later find out because of said event, get checked and find they have Celiacs. I guess the question is, will they let a student have a seminar about it for Student Success Day? Or will it have to be something totally different?
Either way, it is curious how much passion I seem to have for something, and don’t follow it through as much as I could. These days everyone knows at least one person who has Celiacs disease or is on a Gluten Free Diet. Heck look at my facebook friends list, there you will find over 500 who know someone… and there are at least a handful on my list who also have it.. so lets add their friends list into the mix… and so on and so forth.
I guess, my thoughts are that I should maybe become a Celiac spokesperson.. or maybe look into what it will take to start.
